The body sends warning signs before gaining weight

For a long time it has been said that “the body warns” about some disease, but now this was verified by scientists from the International University of Catalonia (UIC), in Barcelona, who discovered that consuming a high fat diet between three and seven days it activates warning signals in the brain, before the body gains weight.

Based on this finding, the experts propose to treat overweight differently according to the patient’s gender – since the mice in which the experiments were carried out in the laboratory reacted differently depending on whether they were male or female – and work on methods of prevention of obesity from the brain.

In the study carried out by the Neurolipid Research Group of the UIC Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, they observed that both the endocannabinoid system – which regulates energy homeostasis and is linked to the development of obesity – and fat brown – which performs the thermogenesis process and also influences body weight – reacted to a diet high in fat.

Published in the magazine Journal of Lipid Research, the research documents in response to excess diet an increase in endocannabinoids in the hypothalamus, a brain region that controls appetite and body metabolism, as well as increased activity of brown fat, which encourages the consumption of calories to lose weight.

Likewise, it was observed that the response was greater in female mice than in male mice, which would suggest that women have greater protection against obesity than men: “we found that when these fats are ingested in short periods of time, there are differences by sex. The levels of endocannabinoids detected are higher in the case of women, “said Dr. Rosalía Rodríguez, one of the authors of the study.

Núria Casals, another of the researchers, clarified that these warning signs of the brain were only identified when obesity is initial and not in advanced stages of the pathology, so the results obtained will be aimed at exploring new biomarkers of obesity and treating this disease preventively and differently depending on the gender of person.
